What Is Deviry?

Deviry is a branded generic of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 10 mg, a synthetic progestin with primarily progestogenic activity plus weak androgenic and glucocorticoid properties. Well-established history (from the 1960s); used in gynaecology, HRT, contraception (injectable form — Depo-Provera), and oncology. Manufactured by Torrent Pharma.

Clinical Uses

• Secondary amenorrhoea: 5–10 mg daily for 5–10 days; withdrawal bleed follows.
• Dysfunctional uterine bleeding: 5–10 mg daily for 5–10 days per cycle.
• HRT progestin opposition: 2.5–10 mg daily (continuous) or 10 mg for 12–14 days/cycle (sequential) in women with intact uterus on estrogen.
• Endometrial hyperplasia without atypia: 10–20 mg daily for 12–14 days/cycle or continuous.
• PCOS secondary amenorrhoea: cyclic withdrawal to protect endometrium.
• Endometrial cancer (adjuvant hormonal): historic use in selected cases.

How to Take

1. Swallow tablet whole with water, with or without food. Take at the same time each day.
2. For secondary amenorrhoea: 5–10 mg daily for 5–10 days; expect a withdrawal bleed 3–7 days after the last dose.
3. For HRT: 10 mg daily for 12–14 days of each 28-day cycle (sequential) OR 2.5–5 mg daily continuous. Duration per clinician.
4. For dysfunctional bleeding: urgent-stop protocols start higher (10–20 mg daily); maintenance lower.
5. Rule out pregnancy before use (medroxyprogesterone is category X in early pregnancy).

Side Effects

Common: breakthrough bleeding, amenorrhoea, breast tenderness, headache, nausea, weight change, fluid retention.

Less common: mood changes (depression), decreased libido, insomnia, acne (androgenic effect).

Serious (rare): thromboembolism, cholestatic jaundice, anaphylactic reactions. Long-term use (esp. injectable Depo-Provera) associated with bone density loss.

HRT context: combined with estrogen, the WHI trial showed small increase in breast cancer risk (+8 cases per 10,000 woman-years) — discuss individualised risk-benefit for menopausal use.

Who Should Not Take Deviry

• Known or suspected pregnancy (category X first trimester)
• Active VTE (DVT, PE), thromboembolism, or recent stroke
• Current/recent breast cancer or estrogen-dependent cancer
• Severe liver disease
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• Missed abortion / incomplete abortion (do not use as abortifacient)

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will I bleed after taking Deviry?

Withdrawal bleeding typically starts 3–7 days after the last tablet in a cyclic course. Amount varies — usually similar to or slightly heavier than a normal period.

Can Deviry induce abortion?

No — and it must not be used in pregnancy. Early pregnancy medroxyprogesterone can cause fetal abnormalities (category X). Medical abortion uses mifepristone + misoprostol.

Is medroxyprogesterone safe in PCOS?

Yes — cyclic MPA is a standard way to induce withdrawal bleeds in PCOS-related amenorrhoea to protect the endometrium from unopposed estrogen.

Does Deviry cause weight gain?

More commonly than some other progestins — weight gain of 1–3 kg is reported in 10–20% of users. Mild androgenic effect contributes.

What about mood changes?

Some women experience low mood on MPA. Alternative progestins (dydrogesterone, micronized progesterone) may have better mood profiles.

Is Deviry the same as the Depo-Provera injection?

Same active ingredient (MPA) but different dose and route. Oral MPA 10 mg is used for short-course gynaecological indications; Depo-Provera 150 mg IM every 3 months is a contraceptive.

Does Deviry raise breast cancer risk?

When combined with estrogen for HRT, yes — WHI showed a small increase (+8 cases/10k woman-years). For short-course gynaecological use at lower doses, the absolute risk signal is smaller.

What if I get breakthrough bleeding on cyclic Deviry?

Common on new initiation — usually settles after 2–3 cycles. Persistent breakthrough bleeding beyond 3 months or heavy/unscheduled bleeding needs clinical review.
