Vanliga frågor
What does Levoflox treat?
Levoflox (levofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad gram-negative and useful gram-positive cover. Common indications: complicated urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, respiratory tract infections (community-acquired pneumonia, exacerbations of COPD), gastroenteritis (traveller’s diarrhoea, severe Salmonella, Shigella), bone and joint infections, and selected gynaecological infections. It is reserved for cases where alternatives are unsuitable due to safety concerns described below.
What is the FDA black-box warning about?
Fluoroquinolones carry FDA black-box warnings for tendinitis and tendon rupture (especially Achilles, higher risk in people over 60, on corticosteroids, or post-transplant), peripheral neuropathy (which can be permanent), CNS effects (anxiety, insomnia, confusion, seizures), and aortic aneurysm/dissection in predisposed patients. They are no longer first-line for uncomplicated UTI, sinusitis, or bronchitis where safer alternatives exist.
Why must I separate Levoflox from antacids and supplements?
Like tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones bind divalent and trivalent cations (calcium, magnesium, aluminium, iron, zinc) and absorption is greatly reduced. Take Levoflox at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids, multivitamins with minerals, dairy products, sucralfate, or oral iron. Take with plenty of water.
What are the most common side effects?
Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, and insomnia are most frequent. QT-interval prolongation, dysglycaemia in diabetics (both hypo- and hyperglycaemia), and photosensitivity are recognised. Stop Levoflox immediately and contact your doctor if you develop tendon pain, numbness, tingling, severe diarrhoea, palpitations, or sudden severe abdominal/back/chest pain.
Can I take Levoflox in pregnancy?
Fluoroquinolones are generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to historic concerns about cartilage development in animal studies. Use only when no safer antibiotic is available. Most cases are best managed with penicillins, cephalosporins, or macrolides during pregnancy.
Can I drink alcohol with Levoflox?
No direct disulfiram-like reaction but alcohol can worsen CNS side effects (dizziness, drowsiness, confusion), which are already a concern with this class. Best avoided during the course.
