Flagyl Tablet helps prevent an infection after surgery. It is also used in the treatment of dental infections, leg ulcers, and pressure sores. This medicine is best taken after eating some food. It should be taken at the same time each day to get the most benefit. The amount you are advised will depend on what you are being treated for and how bad it is, but you should take this antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better after a short time but do not stop taking it until you have finished a full course of treatment, even if you feel well. If you stop taking it early, some bacteria may survive, and the infection may come back. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine and for a few days after stopping it. Otherwise, you may get unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
The most common side effects of this medicine are headache, dryness in the mouth, nausea, and a slight metallic taste in the mouth. These are usually mild but let your doctor know if they bother you or last more than a few days. You can try using sugarless candies or lozenges to overcome any dryness or metallic taste in the mouth.
Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you are allergic to any medicine or have any kidney or liver problems or any disease of the nervous system. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking this medicine.

What does Flagyl treat?
Flagyl (metronidazole) is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and several protozoa. Common indications: bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, Helicobacter pylori eradication, dental infections, intra-abdominal and pelvic infections (with a gram-negative agent), and rosacea (topical).
Why must I avoid alcohol with Flagyl?
metronidazole causes a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol (flushing, headache, palpitations, nausea, vomiting). Avoid all alcohol — including beer, wine, spirits, mouthwashes containing alcohol, cough syrups, and some sauces — during the course AND for at least 48 hours after the final dose. Read labels carefully.
How fast does Flagyl work?
Trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis often resolve with a single 2 g dose or a 5–7 day twice-daily course. Giardiasis and amoebic dysentery improve within 24–48 hours of starting. Always complete the full course; partial treatment promotes resistance and relapse.
What are the common side effects?
Metallic taste, nausea, mild headache, and dark-coloured urine are typical and harmless. Oral candidiasis (thrush) and abdominal cramps are sometimes reported. Long courses can rarely cause peripheral or optic neuropathy and cerebellar dysfunction — stop and seek help if you develop tingling, weakness, or coordination problems.
Is Flagyl safe in pregnancy?
metronidazole is generally avoided in the first trimester because of theoretical concerns from animal data. Second and third trimester use is considered acceptable when the indication is genuine (e.g. symptomatic bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis). Single high-dose regimens are usually deferred until after delivery in breastfeeding mothers; multi-day low-dose regimens are considered compatible.
What if I am also taking warfarin?
metronidazole significantly increases warfarin’s anticoagulant effect, raising INR and bleeding risk. The combination is not absolutely contraindicated but requires more frequent INR monitoring and possibly a temporary warfarin dose reduction. Always tell your prescriber if you take warfarin or any anticoagulant.
