What Is Alaspan?
Alaspan contains loratadine, one of the most-used second-generation antihistamines worldwide. It is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. The active metabolite is desloratadine (sold separately as Aerius). Loratadine has minimal CNS penetration, giving negligible sedation in most users.
How Does Loratadine Work?
Loratadine selectively blocks peripheral H1 histamine receptors with high specificity. By preventing histamine binding, it relieves itching, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and skin wheals. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier in significant amounts at therapeutic doses, hence the lack of sedation that characterises first-generation antihistamines (chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine).
