How to Take Cerazette

Common (transient or adjustable): irregular bleeding (spotting, breakthrough bleeding, or absent periods — any pattern is normal on POPs), breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, acne, reduced libido.

Who Should Not Take Cerazette
- Current or recent breast cancer.
- Active liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis, active tumour).
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding — investigate before starting hormonal contraception.
- Known hypersensitivity to desogestrel.
- Confirmed pregnancy.

- Enzyme inducers reduce POP efficacy: rifampicin, rifabutin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, St John’s Wort, some HIV ARVs. Use backup or switch to non-hormonal method during and 4 weeks after these drugs.
- Antibiotics (non-rifampicin): do NOT reduce POP efficacy. The old advice about backup during all antibiotics is outdated.
