Daktarin Gel (miconazole nitrate 2% w/w gel, Janssen) is a broad-spectrum imidazole antifungal. Confirm the formulation on your pack — oral and topical gels look similar but have different uses:

Miconazole nitrate inhibits fungal CYP51, blocking ergosterol biosynthesis. Like other imidazoles it concentrates in skin and mucosa with minimal systemic absorption. Slight Gram-positive bacterial activity makes it useful in mixed skin infections (e.g. infected nappy rash with secondary Staphylococcus).

Will I taste it?

Oral miconazole gel has a slightly bitter or ‘medicinal’ taste. Hold the gel in the mouth as long as you can before swallowing — contact time matters more than dose. The taste fades within 1–2 minutes.

Can I use the topical gel in the mouth?

No — the dermatological topical gel is formulated for skin and contains preservatives that may irritate oral mucosa. Use only the oral gel in the mouth. Check the carton.

My baby has thrush — is miconazole gel safe?

Avoid in infants < 4 months (choking risk). For older infants and children, use the smaller dose applied to the front of the mouth and gums, four times daily after feeds. Many UK / US guidelines now prefer nystatin oral suspension or oral fluconazole drops in young infants.

I’m on warfarin — can I use miconazole oral gel?

Yes if you need it, but the interaction is real. INR can rise 2–4× even on a 1-week course. Check INR within 3 days of starting, consider holding warfarin or reducing dose 25–50%, and monitor weekly. Many clinicians will switch to nystatin oral suspension instead — no warfarin interaction.

Is Daktarin Gel the same as Daktarin?

Yes — Daktarin is the original Janssen brand of miconazole nitrate. Daktarin Gel contains the same active ingredient, manufactured by Janssen under WHO-GMP. Bioequivalent.

Why is my mouth still sore after a week?

Look for the cause: poorly-fitting dentures, untreated diabetes (high glucose feeds Candida), inhaled steroid use without rinsing, immunosuppression, low iron / B12 / folate. Sometimes the diagnosis is wrong — lichen planus, geographic tongue, and burning mouth syndrome can all mimic thrush. Get a swab if persistent.

Can I share my tube of gel with my partner?

No — to avoid cross-contamination. If both partners have intertrigo or balanitis, each should have their own tube and the tube should be discarded after the course.

What about pregnancy?

Topical miconazole and oral miconazole gel for short-course oral thrush are generally considered low-risk after the first trimester. For vaginal thrush in pregnancy, intravaginal clotrimazole pessaries are first-line.

Why does my denture-stomatitis keep coming back?

The denture itself is a reservoir. Treat the gel for 14 days AND clean the denture mechanically twice daily AND soak overnight in chlorhexidine 0.2% solution. If the denture fits poorly, see a dentist for re-line or replacement.

Can I use miconazole gel on a child’s diaper rash with thrush?

For perianal Candida (red satellite spots), a thin layer of topical miconazole 2× daily for 1–2 weeks works well. Plus barrier cream and frequent nappy changes. Avoid oral gel formulations on broken nappy-area skin (preservative irritation).

Depozitare

Store at 15–25 °C with the cap closed. Discard 6 months after opening. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after expiry.
