Pyridium is a urinary analgesic that relieves UTI-associated burning, urgency and frequency. NOT an antibiotic — use only as a 2-day adjunct to definitive antibiotic therapy. Causes harmless orange-red urine discolouration. Manufactured under WHO-GMP standards.

Întrebări frecvente
Is Pyridium an antibiotic?
No. Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is a urinary tract analgesic — it relieves the burning, urgency, and pain of urinary tract infection, but it does NOT treat the underlying bacterial infection. It must be combined with an actual antibiotic (such as nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim, fosfomycin, or a fluoroquinolone) chosen on susceptibility. Using Pyridium alone allows the infection to progress.
How quickly does Pyridium relieve UTI symptoms?
Usually within 30–60 minutes of the first dose, with peak relief at 2–3 hours. Most people only need 2–3 days of Pyridium (alongside a 3–7 day antibiotic course) — symptoms typically resolve before the antibiotic finishes the bacterial clearance.
Why does my urine turn orange?
Pyridium contains a strong orange-red dye that is excreted unchanged in urine. The colour change is harmless and expected — but it can permanently stain underwear and contact lenses (remove lenses for the course). It also interferes with urine dipstick tests, so tell anyone running urinalysis.
Who should not take Pyridium?
Avoid in significant kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 50 mL/min — drug accumulates), G6PD deficiency (haemolysis risk), severe liver disease, and known hypersensitivity. Caution in elderly patients and those with anaemia. Pregnancy and breastfeeding data are limited; short courses are sometimes used in pregnancy under medical advice.
What are the side effects of Pyridium?
Headache, dizziness, and mild GI upset are the most common. Rare but important: methaemoglobinaemia (cyanosis, shortness of breath, headache — seek immediate care), haemolytic anaemia in G6PD deficiency, and yellowing of the skin or sclera which can indicate methaemoglobinaemia or liver involvement.
How long can I take Pyridium?
Maximum 2 days without medical review. Pyridium is a symptom-controller, not a cure. If pain persists beyond 2 days the underlying infection is not responding to the antibiotic and you need re-assessment, urine culture, and possibly an alternative antibiotic.
