Soliwax Ear Drops contain a four-ingredient cerumenolytic combination — paradichlorobenzene 2% + benzocaine 2.7% + chlorbutol 5% + turpentine oil 15% — that softens and dissolves impacted ear wax (cerumen). Typical use: 3–5 drops in each affected ear, 2–3 times daily for 3–4 days, head tilted, before consulting your clinician for syringing or microsuction if wax persists. Tympanic membrane must be intact.

How Soliwax works

Cerumen is a mixture of desquamated epithelium, keratin, fatty acids and ceruminous gland secretions. When it consolidates and obstructs the ear canal it causes earache, hearing loss, fullness, tinnitus and reflex cough. Cerumenolytics work by lowering the lipid cohesion of the wax and drawing in water:

  • Paradichlorobenzene 2% — fat-solvent ceruminolytic that softens and disperses lipid components of wax.
  • Chlorbutol 5% — antiseptic and mild anaesthetic; emulsifies the keratin matrix.
  • Turpentine oil 15% — terpene solvent that loosens the wax plug.
  • Benzocaine 2.7% — local anaesthetic that dulls earache and the foreign-body sensation while the wax softens.

The combination softens the wax over 3–4 days so that it either falls out spontaneously, is removed by warm-water irrigation, or is removed by microsuction at a clinic.

How to use

  1. Warm the bottle in your hand for a minute (cold drops in the ear can cause vertigo).
  2. Lie on your side with the affected ear uppermost, or tilt the head sharply.
  3. Pull the pinna gently up and back (adults) or down and back (children < 3) to straighten the canal.
  4. Instil 3–5 drops; massage the tragus gently to work the drops in.
  5. Stay in position for 5–10 minutes, then place a small cotton plug at the canal entrance for 10 minutes.
  6. Repeat 2–3 times daily for 3–4 days.
  7. If the wax has not cleared by day 5, see a clinician for syringing or microsuction. Do NOT prolong self-treatment beyond a week without review.

Do NOT use if

  • You suspect a perforated tympanic membrane (sudden ear pain, recent ear surgery, ear injury, recurrent ear discharge, history of grommets currently in place)
  • You have an active middle-ear infection (otitis media) or external-canal infection (otitis externa)
  • The ear canal is bleeding or actively discharging
  • You have severe ear pain, vertigo or sudden hearing loss — see a clinician same-day
  • The patient is a child under 1 year — paediatric ENT review first

Efecte secundare

  • Mild stinging, warmth or itching at instillation — common, transient.
  • Local irritation or contact dermatitis of the ear canal — uncommon, more likely with prolonged use.
  • Rare allergic reaction to benzocaine.
  • If the eardrum is unexpectedly perforated, the drops can cause severe pain and ototoxicity — STOP use and seek same-day ENT review.

Special populations

  • Pregnancy / breastfeeding — minimal systemic absorption from intact ear canal; use only when needed.
  • Children — usable from age 1 with adult supervision and lower volume (2–3 drops).
  • Hearing aid users — wax build-up is common; alternate ear hygiene and clinician follow-up are usually needed in addition to drops.

What works for stubborn wax

If 3–4 days of Soliwax does not clear the impaction:

  • Warm-water irrigation (syringing) at a primary-care clinic — effective for most softened wax.
  • Microsuction by ENT — safer for partial perforation, mastoid cavities, or very hard wax.
  • Manual instrument removal — by ENT for adherent wax against the drum.

Avoid ear candling and cotton buds — both push wax deeper, can perforate the drum, and have caused canal burns.

Depozitare

Store below 30 °C, tightly capped, away from light. Discard 30 days after first opening (preservative efficacy declines). Keep out of children’s reach — accidental ingestion of turpentine oil is toxic.

Întrebări frecvente

How quickly will Soliwax clear my ear?

Most patients notice softening within 24–48 hours. Wax that has been impacted for weeks or months may need 3–4 days of drops followed by clinic syringing or microsuction. Do not extend self-treatment beyond a week without review.

Is it safe to use if I have a hole in my eardrum?

No. Cerumenolytic drops can enter the middle ear through a perforation, causing severe pain and possible ototoxicity. If you have ever had grommets, ear surgery, recurrent ear discharge or sudden ear pain, see a clinician before any self-treatment.

Can children use Soliwax?

Yes from age 1, with adult supervision and lower volume (2–3 drops). Under 1 year, see a paediatric ENT first — wax in infants is uncommon and may be misdiagnosed.

Can I use cotton buds to clean my ears instead?

No. Cotton buds push wax deeper into the canal, compact it against the drum, and have caused tympanic membrane perforation and canal lacerations. The ear is self-cleaning; only treat wax that is causing symptoms.

What is “ear candling” and why should I avoid it?

Ear candling places a hollow cone of wax-coated fabric in the ear and lights it, claiming to draw out wax by suction. It does not work — the residue inside the candle is from the candle itself, not your ear. Burns to the canal and drum are documented (FDA warning 2010). Avoid.

Can I fly with Soliwax in?

Wait until the drops have been instilled and the cotton plug removed before air travel. Wax build-up itself can cause severe barotrauma during cabin pressure changes; treat before travel where possible.

Will Soliwax cause hearing loss?

No. Reduced hearing during the 3–4 day treatment is from the softening wax filling the canal more completely; hearing returns when the wax clears.

Can I use it preventively if I make wax frequently?

A few drops once or twice a week of a softer cerumenolytic (olive oil, almond oil, or sodium bicarbonate ear drops) is preferred for routine prevention. Soliwax is for treatment, not maintenance, because turpentine oil is irritating with prolonged daily use.

I had grommets fitted as a child — can I still use this?

Only if your most recent ENT review confirmed the grommets have extruded and the drum has fully healed. If grommets are still in place, do not use cerumenolytic drops.

How is this different from olive oil ear drops?

Olive oil is the gentlest cerumenolytic — it softens slowly over 5–7 days, suits routine prevention and mild build-up, and is safe with mild perforation. Soliwax is faster and stronger but more irritating with prolonged use, and unsafe with perforation.
