⚡ Quick Answer — What is Lorexane Spray?

Lorexane Spray jest veterinary antiparasitic and antiseptic wound spray from Virbac for dogs, cats, horses and livestock. It combines three actives: gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane) 0.1% — an insecticide that kills fleas, ticks, lice, mange mites, fly maggots and blowfly larvae; proflavin hemisulphate 0.1% — an acridine-class antiseptic dye; and cetrimide 0.5% — a quaternary ammonium antiseptic and surfactant. Used for open and superficial wounds, wound myiasis (maggot infestation), bite and scratch wounds, flea and tick infestations, mange, ringworm-associated lesions, and post-surgical wound hygiene. Spray from 15–20 cm onto the affected area 2–3 times daily until healing, keeping clear of the animal's eyes and mouth. FOR ANIMAL USE ONLY. Not for human use. Do not use on cats below 3 months, pregnant or nursing queens without veterinary advice.

What Is Lorexane Spray?

Lorexane Spray is a combination veterinary spray od Virbac Animal Health designed to tackle two problems that overlap constantly in companion-animal and livestock wound care: external parasite infestation i wound sepsis. By combining an insecticide with two different antiseptics in a single spray, Lorexane Spray is used by pet owners, kennel staff and small-animal vets as a first-line topical for dirty or parasitised wounds in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep and goats.

The three active ingredients each cover a different problem:

  • Gamma benzene hexachloride (gamma BHC, γ-HCH, lindane) 0.1% — a chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticide that kills adult and nymphal stages of fleas, ticks, lice, mange mites (Sarcoptes, Demodex, Otodectes, Cheyletiella), fly maggots (Lucilia i Calliphora species), and blowfly larvae that invade soiled fleece, faecally-matted wounds or open cutaneous lesions.
  • Proflavin hemisulphate 0.1% — an orange-yellow acridine dye antiseptic effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its persistent staining shows visually that the wound has been treated and acts as a mild bacteriostatic film on the wound surface.
  • Cetrimide 0.5% — a quaternary ammonium antiseptic and mild detergent/surfactant that cleans necrotic debris from the wound surface while adding broad antibacterial coverage (particularly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common wound pathogen).

Regulatory note: Lindane (gamma BHC) is restricted or banned for human pharmaceutical use in many jurisdictions due to environmental persistence and neurotoxicity at high exposure. It remains widely used in veterinary wound/ectoparasite sprays in India, Australia, Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia because of its efficacy in a small surface-applied dose. Check local regulations before use in your country.

How Does Lorexane Spray Work?

  • Gamma BHC (lindane) acts on insect GABA-gated chloride channels, producing hyperexcitation, convulsions and death in arthropods within minutes of contact. Fly maggots in wounds die rapidly (30–60 minutes) and are easily removed with gauze after.
  • Proflavin inserts into bacterial DNA (an intercalating dye), preventing replication. Coverage is bacteriostatic at the concentrations used, covering Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and many Gram-negative commensals.
  • Cetrimide disrupts bacterial cell membranes (cationic surfactant) and has detergent action that lifts pus, blood clots and necrotic debris from wound beds. Particularly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms in chronic wounds.

Onset is immediate for the insecticidal action (maggots visibly die and detach within an hour); wound bacterial load drops significantly within 24 hours of twice-daily use.

  • Wound myiasis (maggot infestation) — fly-strike in sheep, neglected wounds in dogs and cats with maggots visible on the wound bed
  • Open cutaneous wounds — bites, scratches, lacerations, abrasions, bite-wound abscesses after drainage
  • Post-surgical wound hygiene — after castration, minor dermatological surgery, dew-claw removal, tail docking
  • Ectoparasite infestations — fleas, ticks, biting lice, sucking lice, mange mites — particularly where the infestation is confined to a small area (face, ear base, tail base); for whole-body infestation, a full bath or spot-on formulation is preferred
  • Hot spots (acute moist dermatitis) — superficial Pseudomonas-associated wet dermatitis in dogs; clip hair first, then spray
  • Ringworm-associated skin lesions — for secondary bacterial infection; a dedicated antifungal (miconazole, enilconazole) is still needed for dermatophyte clearance
  • Kennel cough secondary skin infection — around the face and neck from persistent scratching
  • Livestock wound care — horses (saddle sores, fly bites, fetlock abrasions), cattle and buffalo (horn wounds, tick-attachment sites), sheep (post-shearing cuts, fly-strike)

How to Apply Lorexane Spray Properly

  1. Bezpiecznie unieruchom zwierzę. A second person to hold the animal is helpful, especially for sensitive areas.
  2. Clip matted hair over and around the wound to expose it fully. Clean gross debris with sterile saline or lukewarm water.
  3. Wstrząśnij butelką and prime the pump once into a tissue, directed away from the animal.
  4. Hold the spray 15–20 cm from the wound or affected area. Angle downward.
  5. Spray briefly and evenly onto the wound bed and the 2 cm of surrounding skin. One or two actuations per 5 cm² of wound area is enough. Do not drench.
  6. Keep clear of eyes, mouth and nostrils. If any accidental contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  7. Do not cover the wound with an occlusive bandage immediately after spraying — allow the carrier to dry (2–3 minutes). If a light protective dressing is needed, use a loose gauze.
  8. Prevent the animal from licking the treated area for 15–20 minutes after spray. A Buster collar / Elizabethan collar is helpful for oral-reachable wounds.
  9. For wound myiasis: spray thoroughly, wait 30–60 minutes, then gently remove dead and dying maggots with gauze and tweezers. Repeat after 6–8 hours until no more larvae.
  10. Wash your hands thoroughly after every application. Wear single-use gloves if you are spraying frequently or are pregnant.

Działania niepożądane

Częste:

  • Transient stinging / mild discomfort on application to an open wound
  • Visible orange-yellow staining of hair from proflavin (cosmetic only, fades over weeks)
  • Mild local skin reddening
  • Wet coat look in the treated area until dry

Rzadsze:

  • Hypersalivation / drooling if the animal licks the treated area before the spray dries
  • Vomiting if licked (cetrimide and gamma BHC are irritating)
  • Local dermatitis (contact hypersensitivity)

Serious (stop and call the vet):

  • Gamma BHC systemic toxicity — tremor, seizures, hyperexcitability, ataxia — occurs rarely at surface doses but is a real risk if (a) the animal ingests a lot by licking, (b) spray is applied to very large body-surface areas on cats, or (c) on young / small / debilitated animals. Wash off with warm soapy water and seek veterinary help urgently.
  • Persistent heavy salivation or vomiting — indicates oral ingestion
  • Worsening wound infection despite 3–5 days of use — wound may need surgical debridement and systemic antibiotics

Ostrzeżenia i środki ostrożności

  • FOR ANIMAL USE ONLY. NOT FOR HUMAN USE. Keep out of reach of children. If accidentally applied to humans, wash off thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Koty: cats are more sensitive to chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides than dogs. Use the spray sparingly on small localised areas only. Do not use on kittens under 3 months of age. Consider alternative products (fipronil spot-on, selamectin) for widespread flea/tick control in cats.
  • Toy breeds and small dogs: use sparingly; cover a proportionally smaller area at any one time.
  • Pregnant or nursing queens / bitches / ewes: use only on veterinary advice; the spray label states “with caution” during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Debilitated, emaciated or ill animals: reduce dose and frequency — lower body-fat reduces gamma BHC storage capacity and raises systemic exposure.
  • Do not spray near the eyes, ears, mouth or anus. If accidentally in the eyes, rinse with copious water for 10 minutes and consult a vet.
  • Do not use in aviaries or near fish tanks — gamma BHC is highly toxic to birds, aquatic life and honeybees.
  • Bezpieczeństwo operatora: wear gloves. Avoid inhaling the aerosol — spray in a well-ventilated area. Pregnant women should avoid applying.
  • Do not spray near naked flames, stoves or electrical equipment — the carrier is flammable.
  • Withdrawal period in food-producing animals: follow the label — typically a withholding period for milk and meat after gamma BHC application. Consult a veterinarian.
  • Do not use with other chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides or organophosphate dips at the same time — risk of additive neurotoxicity.

Najczęściej zadawane pytania

Can I use Lorexane Spray on my cat?

Yes — but sparingly, on small localised areas only, and not on kittens under 3 months. Cats are more sensitive to gamma BHC than dogs because they lack some of the glucuronidation enzymes that detoxify chlorinated hydrocarbons. For routine cat flea/tick control, dedicated cat-specific products (fipronil spot-on, selamectin, fluralaner oral) are safer and more effective than a general-purpose spray. Use Lorexane Spray mainly for cat bite-wound cleaning and small localised problem areas.

My dog has maggots in a wound — what do I do?

Clip the hair around the wound, gently clean the area with saline, and spray Lorexane Spray generously onto the affected area. Wait 30–60 minutes for the maggots to die. Then remove the dead maggots with tweezers and gauze. Repeat every 8 hours for the first 24 hours, then 2–3 times daily until the wound is clean. Also seek veterinary help — wound myiasis indicates the underlying wound has been neglected, and the dog may need antibiotics, pain relief, and possibly surgical debridement to prevent systemic infection.

Why is my dog’s fur turning yellow after Lorexane Spray?

That is the proflavin dye staining the treated hair — completely cosmetic. Proflavin is an orange-yellow acridine antiseptic and it shows you exactly which area has been treated. The stain fades over weeks as treated hair is shed and regrown. It does not harm the animal.

Is Lorexane Spray safe around my children?

The product is for animal use only. Keep out of reach of children. After applying, prevent children from petting the treated animal for 2–3 hours while the spray dries — and wash hands thoroughly after any contact with the treated animal for the rest of the day. Do not let children handle an open bottle. Pregnant women should not apply the spray.

How often should I spray a flea-infested dog?

For a localised flea infestation on a dog, two applications 7–10 days apart (targeting eggs that hatch after the first spray) usually clears the active infestation. For a whole-body or persistent flea problem, a spot-on product (fipronil, imidacloprid, selamectin) or an oral product (afoxolaner, fluralaner) works better — it gives 30–90 days of protection per dose. Combine environmental treatment of the pet’s bedding and favourite resting places for complete control.

Can I use Lorexane Spray on my horse?

Yes — Lorexane Spray is licensed for horses and ponies. Use it for saddle sores, fly bites, girth gall, small wounds, and pre-operative site antisepsis. Apply from 20 cm distance to the affected area. Avoid application immediately before vigorous exercise (sweat can liquefy the spray film). For whole-horse fly control in summer, a dedicated equine fly repellent is more practical.

Can Lorexane Spray be used inside the ear canal?

Nie. Never spray inside the ear canal — the aerosol pressure can damage the ear and the cetrimide/gamma BHC vehicle can damage delicate middle-ear structures if the eardrum is perforated. For canine and feline otitis externa (bacterial ear infection with discharge), use a dedicated otic product such as Auriko Ear Drops (enrofloxacin + silver sulfadiazine). For ear margin or pinna skin lesions, Lorexane Spray applied outside the canal is fine.

Is Lorexane Spray the same as Lorexane Cream or Powder?

Virbac makes the Lorexane family in several formats. The spray is most practical for active wound myiasis, open lacerations, and hard-to-reach spots. The powder is drier and useful for weeping hot spots and where you want a dry surface film. The cream (or ointment) is for smaller controlled-area application. Clinical indications overlap heavily; choose the format to match the wound.

What if my animal licks the treated area?

A small amount of licking is usually not problematic — the drying film is bitter and most animals stop quickly. Heavy persistent licking of a freshly sprayed area can lead to vomiting, drooling and — in sensitive or small animals — neurological signs from gamma BHC. Use a Buster / Elizabethan collar for 15–20 minutes after spray while the carrier dries. If the animal shows salivation, unsteadiness or tremor after licking, wash off with warm soapy water and seek veterinary help.

Can I use Lorexane Spray on a pregnant dog or cat?

Only on veterinary advice. The label states “with caution” during pregnancy and lactation because gamma BHC crosses the placenta and is excreted in milk. For a pregnant pet with a small localised wound, the risk of leaving the wound untreated is usually greater than a single small spray dose — discuss with your vet.
