What is Wormentel?

Wormentel is a brand of fenbendazole, a benzimidazole-class broad-spectrum anthelmintic (antiparasitic) drug. It is supplied in three tablet strengths: 222 mg, 444 mg and 500 mg. The 222 mg and 444 mg strengths use the same dosing units as the original veterinary product (Panacur), allowing flexible dosing across the wide range of indications and species; the 500 mg strength is convenient for adult human dosing.

Fenbendazole has been in continuous clinical use since the 1970s — primarily as a veterinary anthelmintic in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and zoo animals (where it is one of the most widely used dewormers globally). It is increasingly used in humans in jurisdictions where albendazole or mebendazole supply is intermittent.

How fenbendazole works

Fenbendazole binds with high affinity to parasite β-tubulin, blocking microtubule polymerisation in the parasite’s cells. This disrupts the parasite’s ability to absorb glucose from the host gut, causes energy depletion within 24-48 hours, and ultimately kills the parasite. Mammalian (host) tubulin has a much lower affinity for benzimidazoles, which is why these drugs are highly selective and well-tolerated in humans and animals.

Fenbendazole is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract — oral bioavailability is approximately 1-2% in dogs and humans. This is actually advantageous for an intestinal anthelmintic: high concentrations are maintained in the gut lumen (where the parasites live) while systemic exposure stays low. Taking fenbendazole with a fatty meal increases absorption modestly.

The drug is metabolised in the liver to oxfendazole (the sulfoxide) and a sulfone metabolite, both of which retain anthelmintic activity. Excretion is primarily faecal.

Which parasites Wormentel treats

Established indications:

• Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) — one of the most common human parasites globally; very high cure rate
• Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus) — high cure rate
• Whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) — benzimidazoles are first-line; multi-day course recommended
• Pinworm / threadworm (Enterobius vermicularis) — very common in children; single dose with repeat at 14 days for the egg-cycle
• Tapeworm (Taenia saginata, Hymenolepis nana) — useful but praziquantel remains first-line for most cestodes
• Giardiasis (Giardia lamblia / duodenalis) — effective alternative to metronidazole, particularly in metronidazole-resistant cases
• Strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis) — ivermectin remains first-line; benzimidazoles are an alternative
• Trichostrongyliasis — effective

Veterinary indications (Wormentel is also used by vets and pet owners worldwide):

• Dogs and puppies: roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, Giardia, Taenia (not Dipylidium)
• Cats: roundworm, hookworm, lungworm
• Horses: large/small strongyles, ascarids, pinworms
• Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs: GI nematodes, lungworms, certain tapeworms

Dosage by indication & strength

Adult human dosing (off-label, follow medical advice):

Take Wormentel with food, ideally containing some fat — this modestly increases absorption (which matters for systemic infections; less so for purely intestinal worms).

Copii: paediatric dosing is weight-based (typically 5-10 mg/kg/day). For children under 6 or weighing under 20 kg, dosing should be supervised by a paediatrician — mebendazole or albendazole at licensed paediatric doses are usually preferred.

Veterinary use (general guidance — consult your vet for species-specific dosing): dogs and cats are typically dosed at 50 mg/kg once daily for 3-5 consecutive days. The 222 mg tablet is convenient for dogs around 4-5 kg (one tablet/day); the 500 mg tablet for dogs around 10 kg. Always weigh the animal and dose accurately.

Efecte secundare și siguranță

Fenbendazole has an excellent safety profile in both humans and animals. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild:

• Common (1 in 100): mild abdominal discomfort, transient nausea, diarrhoea (often related to die-off of intestinal parasites)

• Rare: elevated liver enzymes (transient, monitored if courses are prolonged), neutropenia (very rare, generally with prolonged high-dose courses)
• Very rare: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (class effect of benzimidazoles)

Note that mild GI symptoms in the first 1-3 days of treatment often reflect parasite die-off (release of antigens) rather than drug toxicity. They typically settle as treatment continues.

Do not take Wormentel if:

• You are pregnant or planning pregnancy — benzimidazoles are teratogenic in animal studies; avoid in the first trimester especially. If treatment of a parasitic infection is essential, the decision should be made by an obstetrician or infectious disease specialist.
• You have known hypersensitivity to fenbendazole or other benzimidazoles (mebendazole, albendazole)
• You have severe hepatic impairment

How quickly does Wormentel kill worms?

Why do I need to repeat the dose at 14 days for pinworm?

Pinworm (threadworm) eggs survive for up to 2 weeks on bedding, clothing, and surfaces, and can re-infect the host. The single-dose treatment kills the adult worms in the gut but does not destroy the egg pool in the environment. Repeating at 14 days catches any re-infection from the egg cycle. All household members should be treated simultaneously to avoid re-introduction.

Can I give Wormentel to my dog or cat?

Yes — fenbendazole is one of the most widely used canine and feline dewormers globally and is the active ingredient in Panacur. Standard dose is 50 mg/kg once daily for 3-5 days. The 222 mg and 500 mg strengths are convenient for the most common dog weight ranges. Always weigh the animal and dose accurately, and consult your vet for any animal younger than 6 weeks, pregnant, or with underlying disease.

Can I take Wormentel during pregnancy?
