What is Albalon Eye Drop?
Albalon Eye Drop is manufactured by Allergan and contains Naphazoline 0.012% as a sterile ophthalmic solution. Naphazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that constricts conjunctival blood vessels, rapidly reducing redness from minor eye irritation, exposure to dust or smoke, and over-use of contact lenses. It does NOT treat allergy.
How It Works
Naphazoline activates alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors on conjunctival blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction. The eye whitens within minutes and the effect lasts 2–4 hours. Naphazoline does not affect histamine, mast cells, or any pathway central to allergy.
Indications
- Minor eye redness from environmental irritation (dust, smoke, swimming pool chlorine)
- Contact-lens-related redness (short-term only — review lens hygiene)
- Allergic redness as adjunct to a true antihistamine drop
Dosing
1–2 drops in affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily as needed. Do not exceed 3–5 consecutive days — see rebound warning below.
Side Effects
Local: mild stinging on instillation, transient blurred vision, dryness, mydriasis (pupil dilation), rebound redness with prolonged use.
Systemic: rare; theoretical risk of hypertension, palpitations, narrow-angle glaucoma if absorbed in significant amounts (especially in young children).

Why can't I use Albalon Eye Drop every day?

What if my eyes are chronically red?
Treat the underlying cause: dry eye, blepharitis, allergic conjunctivitis, episcleritis. Decongestant drops mask the redness without addressing the cause and can make it worse.
Can children use Albalon Eye Drop?
Avoid in children under 6 — systemic absorption of naphazoline can cause CNS depression, hypotension, and bradycardia. For older children, use sparingly under parental supervision.
Will Albalon Eye Drop make my pupils dilate?
Yes — alpha-adrenergic stimulation causes mild pupil dilation, which can precipitate acute angle-closure glaucoma in patients with narrow angles. Avoid in known narrow-angle glaucoma.
What if I have high blood pressure?
Topical naphazoline can be absorbed and cause systemic alpha-adrenergic effects (raised BP, palpitations) in susceptible patients. Caution with uncontrolled hypertension.
Can I use Albalon Eye Drop with my contact lenses?
Remove lenses before instillation; reinsert after 10 minutes. The preservative can be absorbed by soft lenses.
What if I have diabetes?
Use cautiously. Adrenergic agents can blunt the heart-rate response to hypoglycaemia.
What about driving?
Naphazoline causes mild pupil dilation — there may be transient glare, especially at night. Wait until vision is normal before driving.
What's the alternative for chronic redness?
If your eyes are red because of allergy, use an antihistamine drop (olopatadine, epinastine). If because of dry eye, lubricants and cyclosporine. If because of blepharitis, lid hygiene and sometimes oral azithromycin or doxycycline.
