What is Zaha Eye Drop?

Zaha Eye Drop is manufactured by Sun Pharma and contains Azithromycin 1% as a sterile ophthalmic solution. Macrolides are bacteriostatic antibiotics with strong activity against Gram-positive cocci, atypical organisms (Chlamydia, Mycoplasma), and some Gram-negative coverage.

How It Works

Azithromycin binds the 50S bacterial ribosomal subunit, blocking peptidyl transferase activity and preventing protein synthesis. The result is bacteriostatic at lower concentrations and bactericidal at higher doses against susceptible organisms. Topical Azithromycin achieves high local concentrations in the conjunctiva and tear film.

Indications

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Moraxella, Haemophilus)
  • Bacterial blepharitis — particularly Staphylococcus aureus
  • Trachoma (Chlamydia trachomatis serotypes A-C) — WHO-endorsed treatment in endemic regions; usually combined with oral azithromycin for population-level control
  • Inclusion conjunctivitis in adults (Chlamydia trachomatis serotypes D-K)

Dosing

IndicationDose
Bacterial conjunctivitis1 drop twice daily (8–12 hours apart) for 2 days, then 1 drop once daily for 5 more days (total 7 days)
Trachoma1 drop twice daily for 3 days, repeated quarterly for 1 year in endemic regions

Side Effects

Local: mild stinging on instillation, transient blurred vision (especially with ointment), eye irritation, foreign body sensation, conjunctival hyperaemia, ocular itching.

Systemic: negligible from topical use.

Warnings & Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to macrolides (azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin)
  • Viral or fungal keratitis
  • Pregnancy — Category B; generally safe topically
  • Breastfeeding — compatible
  • Children — safe from infancy (erythromycin ointment is the preferred neonatal prophylaxis)

Storage

Store at 15–25°C. Discard 28 days after first opening.

Често задавани въпроси

When is Zaha Eye Drop used?

Bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, trachoma, and adult inclusion conjunctivitis (Chlamydia). Particularly useful in pregnancy and infancy because of the favourable safety profile.

How does Zaha Eye Drop differ from fluoroquinolones?

Azithromycin is bacteriostatic at typical doses; fluoroquinolones are bactericidal. Azithromycin has stronger activity against atypical organisms (Chlamydia) and is preferred in pregnancy and neonates. Fluoroquinolones have stronger Pseudomonas coverage.

Is Zaha Eye Drop safe in pregnancy?

Yes — Category B, generally considered safe. Topical absorption is minimal.

Why is Zaha Eye Drop sometimes given just for 3 days in trachoma?

Azithromycin’s long tissue half-life means a 3-day course delivers therapeutic concentrations in conjunctival tissue for 5–7 days. WHO-endorsed mass treatment programmes use this short course quarterly for trachoma elimination.

Can Zaha Eye Drop be used in newborns?

Yes — azithromycin is generally safe from infancy when bacterial conjunctivitis is suspected.

What if my eyes are still red after treatment?

Bacterial conjunctivitis usually clears within 5–7 days. Persistent redness suggests a different diagnosis: allergic conjunctivitis, viral keratoconjunctivitis, dry-eye disease, or a missed differential like episcleritis. Re-evaluate.

Will Zaha Eye Drop blur my vision?

No — solutions cause minimal blur.

Can I wear contact lenses?

Stop lenses during treatment and for 24 hours after symptoms resolve.

What if I get a hypersensitivity reaction?

Stop the drop. Switch to a non-macrolide antibiotic class. True hypersensitivity is rare with topical macrolides.

How is Zaha Eye Drop stored?

Room temperature 15–25°C, protected from light. Discard after 28 days.
