What Scaboma Lotion is and how it works

Scaboma Lotion contains gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane) 1%. Gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane, γ-HCH) is an organochlorine pesticide that disrupts arthropod nerve cell function, causing paralysis and death of mites and lice. It penetrates the skin in mammalian use and can cause central nervous system toxicity — particularly seizures — at therapeutic doses if misapplied. Manufacturer: WHO-GMP certified manufacturer.

Indications (second-line)

• Scabies — when permethrin treatment has failed and ivermectin is unavailable/contraindicated.
• Head lice — when permethrin and malathion have failed.

How to apply (scabies)

1. Bath or shower; pat dry.
2. Apply Scaboma Lotion to the entire body from the neck down — including skin folds, between fingers and toes, genitals, soles.
3. Avoid the face, scalp, and ears in adults.
4. Leave on for 6–8 hours maximum (NOT overnight; risk of toxicity).
5. Wash off thoroughly with cool water.
6. Single application is typically sufficient. Do NOT routinely repeat — repeat only if treatment failure is confirmed at 2 weeks.
7. Wash all clothes, bedding, towels at >60°C on the day of treatment.
8. Treat all household contacts simultaneously.

Странични ефекти

• Чести: mild itching, burning, redness at application site.
• По-рядко: headache, dizziness, contact dermatitis.
• Рядко, но сериозни: seizures (especially in children, low body weight, broken skin, prolonged contact, repeat applications), aplastic anaemia, neurotoxicity.

• Children under 6 (relative — high CNS risk; seizures reported).
• Premature infants.
• Open wounds, severe eczema, large areas of broken skin (significant systemic absorption).
• History of seizures or low seizure threshold.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (permethrin preferred).
• Body weight under 50 kg (relative — increased toxicity risk).

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Lindane is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Permethrin 5% is the safer alternative. If lindane is unavoidable in breastfeeding, interrupt nursing for 24 hours after application and discard expressed milk during this window.

Why is lindane second-line and not first-line?

Lindane is associated with reported seizures and neurotoxicity, and has been withdrawn in the US (2009), EU (2008), and Canada (2004). It is also environmentally persistent. Permethrin and ivermectin are equally effective and much safer.

Can I use Scaboma Lotion if permethrin failed?

Yes — second-line use after permethrin failure is reasonable when ivermectin is unavailable. Confirm true treatment failure (new burrows at 2–4 weeks) rather than residual post-scabies itch.

Why must I limit application to 6–8 hours?

Longer contact time increases systemic absorption and CNS toxicity risk. Permethrin can be left on overnight (8–14 hours); lindane cannot.

Can I use Scaboma Lotion on children?

Generally avoid in children under 6 due to higher seizure risk (children have higher body-surface area and lower seizure threshold). Use permethrin instead.

Is Scaboma Lotion safe in pregnancy?

No — contraindicated. Use permethrin 5%, which is the safer alternative.

How long until the itching goes away?

Itching can persist for 2–4 weeks after successful treatment due to ongoing immune reaction to dead mite proteins. This is NOT treatment failure. Treat with oral antihistamines and emollients.

What if I missed a spot?

Apply more lindane only to the missed area, not the whole body again. Multiple full-body applications increase neurotoxicity risk.

Do I need to treat my family?

Yes — all household members and close contacts simultaneously. Untreated contacts re-infest the family in 4–6 weeks.

What about washing clothes?

All clothes, bedding, towels worn or used in the past 3 days washed at >60°C on the day of treatment.

Can I bathe right after applying?

No — wait the full 6–8 hours, then wash off. Bathing earlier reduces efficacy. Bathing later increases absorption.
