What Is Airz?

Airz is an Indian-manufactured generic of glycopyrronium bromide, a long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator. Internationally the same drug is sold as Seebri Breezhaler. glycopyrronium bromide binds muscarinic receptors (M1 and M3) on airway smooth muscle for many hours, providing 24-hour bronchodilation with once-daily dosing. It does not cause the tremor, palpitations, or hypokalaemia of β2 agonists.

How Does Airz Work?

The parasympathetic nervous system maintains a baseline tone in bronchial smooth muscle through acetylcholine acting on M3 muscarinic receptors. In COPD this tone is the dominant reversible component of airflow obstruction. glycopyrronium bromide is a kinetically-selective M3 antagonist — it binds and dissociates slowly, giving sustained bronchodilation over 24 hours. The result is:

• Sustained bronchodilation for 24 hours from a single dose
• Reduced exacerbations in COPD by 14–28% in landmark trials (UPLIFT, POET-COPD)
• Improved exercise tolerance and reduced dyspnoea in stable COPD
• Reduced rescue inhaler use when added to ICS-LABA in severe asthma (TIOSPIR-asthma trial)

Airz Dosage

How to Use Airz Properly

• Insert one rotacap into the Rotahaler with the coloured end down.
• Twist sharply — listen for the click.
• Breathe out fully away from device.
• Seal lips around mouthpiece.
• Inhale forcefully and deeply; you should hear the rotacap whir.
• Hold breath 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
• Check rotacap is empty; repeat if powder remains.
• For ICS-containing combinations: rinse mouth, gargle, and spit out.

Side Effects of Airz

Common (anticholinergic, dose-related):

• Dry mouth (commonest — typically mild, may improve with sips of water)
• Constipation
• Throat irritation, mild cough on inhalation
• Sinusitis, rhinitis, nasopharyngitis
• Mild urinary hesitancy in older men with prostate enlargement

• Use once daily, every day — protective effect is maintained only with consistent dosing.
• Avoid mist contacting the eyes — risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma in predisposed patients (narrow anterior chamber, family history). Seek immediate help if eye pain or vision change occurs.
• Prostatic obstruction: use cautiously in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia or bladder neck obstruction — risk of urinary retention.

• Store below 25°C in a dry place. Keep desiccant in the bottle.
• Do not store in the bathroom — humidity makes the powder clump and reduces dose delivery.

How is glycopyrronium different from tiotropium?

Both are LAMAs for COPD. Glycopyrronium has a faster onset (5 min for partial effect) than tiotropium (1–3 h to peak), but final 24-hour bronchodilation is similar. Glycopyrronium is also the LAMA component in some combination inhalers (Ultibro, Xoterna with indacaterol; Trimbow with formoterol + beclomethasone).

Is Airz the same as Seebri?

Yes — both deliver glycopyrronium 50 mcg per dry-powder capsule. Seebri Breezhaler (Novartis) is the international brand; Airz (Glenmark) is the Indian-market generic. Clinically interchangeable.

Can Airz be used for asthma?

Glycopyrronium is licensed for COPD only — tiotropium has more asthma data and is the LAMA of choice for severe asthma add-on. Discuss with your prescriber.

Why is Airz once daily?

Glycopyrronium has a long airway residence time (~24 h), allowing once-daily maintenance dosing.

Does Airz cause dry mouth?

Yes — the most common LAMA side effect. Usually mild; manage with sips of water, sugar-free gum, good oral hygiene.

Is Airz a rescue inhaler?

No — it is a controller. Keep a SABA (Asthalin, Levolin) for acute attacks.

Can I take Airz during pregnancy?

Limited data — use only if benefit clearly outweighs risk.

What if mist contacts my eyes?

Risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma in predisposed patients. Aim away from eyes; seek emergency care for eye pain or halos around lights.

How does Airz compare to ipratropium (Ipravent)?

Ipratropium is short-acting (4–6 hours, 4× daily). Glycopyrronium is long-acting (24 hours, once daily). Modern COPD management uses LAMAs (long-acting); short-acting ipratropium is reserved for symptomatic relief, COPD exacerbations, or asthma add-on.
