What Fucidin Cream is and how it works

Fucidin Cream contains fusidic acid 2%. Fusidic acid is a steroidal antibiotic isolated from Fusidium coccineum that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis at the level of elongation factor G — distinct from beta-lactams, macrolides, and aminoglycosides, so cross-resistance is uncommon. It is highly active against staphylococci (including many methicillin-resistant strains) and streptococci, but has limited Gram-negative cover. Manufacturer: LEO Pharma (WHO-GMP certified).

Indications

• Impetigo — first-line topical for limited disease.
• Infected eczema and dermatitis (with steroid in combination products).
• Infected wounds and minor skin trauma — superficial bacterial infection.
• Folliculitis — limited disease.
• Erythrasma — Corynebacterium minutissimum.

How to apply

• Clean the affected area with mild soap and water; pat dry.
• Apply a thin layer 3–4 times daily.
• Course: 7–14 days. Stop and reassess if no improvement at 7 days.
• Cover the lesion with a non-occlusive dressing if needed to prevent contact spread.
• Wash hands before and after application.

Side effects

• Common: mild burning, stinging, redness at application site.
• Less common: contact dermatitis, secondary infection with resistant organisms.
• Rare: photosensitivity, severe contact allergy.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to fusidic acid or formulation excipients.
• Eye application (use ophthalmic preparation only).
• Use on extensive areas of broken skin without clinical necessity.

Drug interactions

Topical absorption is low so systemic interactions are rare. Avoid concurrent use with cyclosporine, statins, or oral fusidic acid (for any use) — systemic fusidic acid plus statin causes rhabdomyolysis. Topical fusidic acid is generally safe with concurrent statin therapy.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Topical fusidic acid has minimal systemic absorption; can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding for short courses on small areas. Avoid breast/nipple application before feeding.

Store below 25 °C. Keep tube tightly closed.

How is fusidic acid different from other topical antibiotics?

Fusidic acid has a unique mechanism (EF-G inhibition) that differs from beta-lactams, macrolides, and aminoglycosides — so cross-resistance is uncommon. Strong staphylococcal activity (including some MRSA) makes it preferred for skin infections where staph is the main pathogen.

How long until I see improvement?

Crusting reduces in 2–3 days; full resolution by 7–10 days. If no improvement at 7 days, swab for culture and switch agent.

Can I use Fucidin Cream for cuts and grazes?

For uncomplicated minor cuts, soap-and-water cleansing is usually sufficient. Reserve topical antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infection (redness, swelling, pus, persistent crusting).

Is Fucidin Cream safe in pregnancy?

Yes for short topical use on small areas. Discuss with prescriber for extensive use.

How long can I use Fucidin Cream?

Maximum 14 days continuous use. Avoid prolonged or prophylactic use to prevent resistance.

Can I cover the treated area?

A non-occlusive light dressing (gauze) is fine for impetigo to prevent contact spread. Avoid airtight occlusion.

What if the infection comes back?

Recurrent infection often signals an underlying skin barrier problem or carriage state (e.g. nasal carriage of S. aureus). Address the underlying issue rather than repeated topical antibiotic courses.

Can I use Fucidin Cream on my face?

Yes for confirmed facial bacterial infection (impetigo, folliculitis). Avoid use as a “moisturiser” or for unspecified facial irritation.

Is fusidic acid effective against MRSA?

Many MRSA strains remain fusidic-sensitive. Resistance rates vary by region and rise with extensive use. Local antibiogram data is the best guide.

Should I see a doctor first?

For uncomplicated impetigo or minor infected lesion, self-treatment with a short course is reasonable. See a clinician if symptoms worsen, fever develops, or rash spreads beyond a small area.
