What Is Ipravent Rotacaps?

Ipravent Rotacaps is an ipratropium bromide product manufactured by Cipla at WHO-GMP certified facilities. Internationally ipratropium is sold as Atrovent (Boehringer Ingelheim).

How Does Ipravent Rotacaps Work?

Ipratropium is a quaternary ammonium derivative of atropine, modified to limit systemic absorption and minimise central anticholinergic effects. It blocks acetylcholine binding at M1, M2, and M3 muscarinic receptors on airway smooth muscle, neutralising parasympathetic constrictor tone. Onset 15 minutes (slower than SABA), peak 1–2 hours, duration 4–6 hours.

How to Use Ipravent Rotacaps Properly

• Insert one rotacap into the Rotahaler with the coloured end down.
• Twist the base sharply — listen for the click.
• Breathe out fully away from device.
• Seal lips around mouthpiece.
• Inhale forcefully and deeply; you should hear the rotacap whir.
• Hold breath 10 seconds; breathe out slowly.
• Check the rotacap is empty; repeat the inhalation if powder remains.

Side Effects of Ipravent Rotacaps

• Dry mouth (anticholinergic)
• Throat irritation, cough
• Mild headache
• Mild urinary hesitancy in older men with prostate enlargement
• Bitter or metallic taste
• Eye irritation if mist contacts eyes

Less common but serious:

• Acute angle-closure glaucoma (avoid mist near eyes; use mouthpiece preferred over mask)
• Acute urinary retention in patients with prostatic obstruction

• Pregnancy: low-risk; uncontrolled asthma is more dangerous than the medication.
• Carry a SABA reliever for asthma rescue — ipratropium has slower onset.

Why dry mouth?

Common anticholinergic effect. Sips of water, sugar-free gum, good oral hygiene help.

Can children use Ipravent?

Yes — paediatric doses are available for nebulised ipratropium (often combined with salbutamol in moderate-to-severe acute asthma).

Is Ipravent safe in pregnancy?

Yes — long-standing use in pregnancy without major signals. Uncontrolled asthma is more dangerous.

Can I use Ipravent every day for COPD?

Yes — but modern COPD management favours once-daily LAMA (tiotropium, Tiova) for maintenance over 4× daily ipratropium. Discuss with your prescriber.

Should I rinse my mouth after Ipravent?

Not strictly needed (no steroid component) but a quick rinse helps reduce dry mouth and bitter taste.
