What Acnedap Gel is and how it works

Acnedap Gel contains dapsone 5%. Topical dapsone has dual mechanisms in acne: (1) antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes), and (2) anti-inflammatory effects independent of antibacterial action — inhibiting neutrophil chemotaxis and reducing reactive oxygen species. Topical absorption is much lower than oral, so the haematological side effects of oral dapsone (haemolysis in G6PD deficiency, methaemoglobinaemia, agranulocytosis) are not typically seen with topical use. Indications

• Mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris — papular and pustular acne.
• Adult female acne — particularly along jawline and chin.
• Acne in skin of colour — minimises post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
• Sensitive skin where retinoids or BPO are not tolerated.

How to apply

• Cleanse with a gentle non-foaming cleanser, pat dry.
• Apply a pea-sized amount twice daily — morning and evening — to entire affected area, not just spots.
• Allow to absorb for 5–10 minutes before applying moisturiser or sunscreen.
• Continue for at least 12 weeks before judging response.
• Use SPF 30+ daily — this protects pigment outcomes and is good acne hygiene.

Side effects

• Common: mild dryness, peeling, redness, oiliness or burning at the application site — usually transient.
• Less common: orange-yellow discolouration when used with BPO (cosmetic, washes off), contact dermatitis.
• Rare: haemolysis in severe G6PD deficiency (extensive prolonged use only), methaemoglobinaemia (extensive use).

Contraindications

• Severe G6PD deficiency (relative — for extensive use; minimal risk with localised facial application).
• Known hypersensitivity to sulfones or sulfonamides.
• Children under 12.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (limited data; consult prescriber).

Why use topical dapsone over BPO or retinoid?

Topical dapsone is well-tolerated by sensitive skin and effective in mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. It is preferred when retinoids cause excessive irritation or photosensitivity, in skin of colour where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a concern, and in adult female acne with sensitive skin.

Do I need a G6PD test before topical dapsone?

Generally no for normal-area topical use — systemic absorption is minimal. Oral dapsone requires G6PD testing; topical does not, except in extensive prolonged use scenarios.

How long until I see results?

Reduction in inflammatory lesions at 4–8 weeks; full effect at 12 weeks. Continue for at least 3 months before declaring failure.

Can I use Acnedap Gel with retinoids?

Yes — combination is more effective than either alone. Apply dapsone in the morning and retinoid at night. Both are well-tolerated together.

Why does my skin look orange when I use BPO?

A reversible oxidation reaction between dapsone and BPO. Cosmetic only — washes off with cleanser. Avoid by applying at separate times of day.

Is Acnedap Gel safe in pregnancy?

Limited data — defer use until after pregnancy. Topical dapsone has minimal systemic absorption but is not recommended without specialist consultation.

Can children use Acnedap Gel?

Generally not under 12. Specialist guidance for older adolescents.

How is topical dapsone different from oral dapsone?

Oral dapsone is used for leprosy, dermatitis herpetiformis, and select autoimmune conditions; it has significant systemic side effects (haemolysis, methaemoglobinaemia, agranulocytosis) and requires G6PD screening and CBC monitoring. Topical absorption is negligible — these systemic effects are essentially absent.

Will Acnedap Gel help with hormonal acne?

Yes — dapsone is particularly effective in adult female hormonal acne (jawline, chin distribution). Combine with hormonal therapy (combined OC, spironolactone) for best results.

Can I use Acnedap Gel on the chest and back?

Yes — torso application uses more product per session but is otherwise the same protocol.
