Συχνές Ερωτήσεις
What is Linox used for?
Linox (linezolid) is an oxazolidinone-class antibiotic reserved for serious infections caused by drug-resistant gram-positive organisms — methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and resistant pneumococci. Typical uses: complicated skin and soft-tissue infections, hospital and ventilator-associated pneumonia, and selected bone, joint, and CNS infections under specialist supervision.
Why is Linox considered a “last-line” antibiotic?
Linezolid is one of the few oral options for resistant gram-positive infection and stewardship guidance reserves it for documented or strongly suspected resistance. Indiscriminate use accelerates resistance and removes a critical option for future serious infections. Use should always follow specialist input.
What are the major safety concerns with Linox?
Three concerns dominate: (1) thrombocytopenia and anaemia, especially with courses longer than 14 days — full blood count monitoring is required for prolonged use; (2) peripheral and optic neuropathy, mostly with extended courses, sometimes irreversible; (3) serotonin syndrome when combined with serotonergic agents (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol, pethidine, triptans, linezolid is itself a weak MAOI). Strict review of concurrent medication is essential before starting.
Are there food restrictions?
Linezolid’s weak MAOI activity means avoiding very high-tyramine foods during the course (aged cheeses, draft beer, tap-fermented wines, soy sauce in large amounts, cured/aged meats, broad bean pods). Normal everyday consumption is usually fine; concentrated tyramine sources are the concern.
How long is treatment with Linox?
Skin and soft-tissue: 10–14 days. Pneumonia: 10–14 days. Bone or joint infection: often 4–6 weeks under specialist care, with FBC monitoring at minimum every 2 weeks for prolonged courses.
Can I take Linox in pregnancy?
Pregnancy data are limited. Linezolid is generally avoided unless no safer alternative exists for a serious resistant infection. Specialist counselling is needed before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
