What Is Primolut-N?

Primolut-N is a hormonal medication containing Norethisterone (Norethindrone) 5 mg, manufactured by Bayer — one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. It is primarily used to delay periods, treat irregular menstruation, endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding.

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen (progesterone analog) that mimics the effects of the natural hormone progesterone. By maintaining elevated progesterone levels, Primolut-N prevents the uterine lining from shedding, which delays or regulates menstruation.

How to Use Primolut-N to Delay Your Period

This is the most common use. Follow these steps:

1. Start taking Primolut-N 3 days before your period is expected to begin.
2. Take one 5 mg tablet three times daily (morning, afternoon, evening) with water.
3. Continue taking the tablets for as long as you want to delay your period (up to 10–14 days is generally considered safe).
4. Your period will start 2–3 days after you stop taking the tablets.

How Primolut-N Works

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen that binds to progesterone receptors in the uterus. During a normal menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise after ovulation to maintain the uterine lining. When progesterone drops (if pregnancy doesn’t occur), the lining sheds — this is your period.

By taking Primolut-N, you artificially maintain high progesterone levels, which keeps the uterine lining intact and delays menstruation. When you stop taking the tablets, progesterone levels fall and a withdrawal bleed (period) occurs within 2–3 days.

Uncommon but Serious

• Blood clots (DVT/PE) — Norethisterone is converted to ethinylestradiol in the body, slightly increasing clot risk. Seek immediate medical attention for sudden leg pain/swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness.
• Jaundice — Stop taking Primolut-N if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes.
• Severe headache or migraine with aura — Stop immediately and consult a doctor.

• Women who are pregnant or suspect pregnancy
• Women with a history of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack
• Women with liver disease or liver tumors
• Women with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• Women with breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers
• Women with severe diabetes with vascular complications
