Auriko Ear Drops are combination antibacterial ear drops licensed for dogs and cats with otitis externa (outer-ear infection). Each millilitre contains enrofloxacin (a veterinary fluoroquinolone antibiotic) plus silver sulfadiazine (a sulpha-silver complex with broad antibacterial and mild antifungal activity). The combination is chosen to cover the two most common problems in infected dog and cat ear canals: resistant Gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and mixed bacterial + yeast overgrowth.

Otitis externa is one of the top three reasons dogs are presented to veterinarians globally. Breeds with long, pendulous or hairy ears (Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Shih Tzus, poodles, Shar-Peis, Bichon Frises) are predisposed; cats are less commonly affected but can develop otitis externa from ear-mite infestation, allergies, or polyps. How Do Auriko Ear Drops Work?

• Enrofloxacin is a second-generation veterinary fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It is bactericidal against most Gram-negative pathogens (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, E. coli, Klebsiella) and many Gram-positive pathogens (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius — the commonest otitis pathogen in dogs). It has weak activity against anaerobes and Streptococcus.
• Silver sulfadiazine (known in human wound care as Flamazine / Silvadene) releases silver ions that bind bacterial DNA and disrupt membrane function — broad-spectrum bactericidal cover including good anti-Pseudomonas activity and a useful supplementary effect against Malassezia yeast overgrowth, which frequently accompanies canine otitis externa.

The two together cover the overwhelming majority of ear-canal pathogens seen in veterinary practice. Topical fluoroquinolone concentrations in the ear canal are 100× higher than achievable systemically, overcoming many resistance mechanisms that limit oral antibiotic efficacy. Silver sulfadiazine adds biofilm-breaking activity that oral drugs cannot deliver to the ear canal.

Auriko Ear Drops is niet first choice for: otodectic mange (ear mites — need selamectin, imidacloprid-moxidectin, or ivermectin products), pure yeast otitis (dedicated antifungal drops), primary auto-immune or proliferative ear disease, otitis media with eardrum rupture (systemic antibiotics + specialist imaging needed), or “cleaner” use alone — it is a medicated product, not an ear-canal washing solution.

How to Apply Auriko Ear Drops Properly

1. Restrain the animal safely. Have a second person hold the animal and keep the head steady. Expect some wriggling — infected ears are painful.
2. Clean the ear canal first with a veterinary ear cleanser (e.g. epi-otic, squalene-based). Pour a few ml into the canal, gently massage the base of the ear for 20–30 seconds, let the dog shake its head, then wipe the external canal and pinna with clean cotton wool. Never use cotton buds deep in the canal — they push debris inward and can damage the eardrum.
3. Wait 10–15 minutes after cleaning for the canal to dry before applying medication.
4. Warm the drops slightly by holding the bottle in your hand for a minute — cold drops sting more.
5. Lift the pinna (ear flap) upward to open the canal. Gently place the tip of the bottle at the canal opening — do not insert it deeply.
6. Instil the correct number of drops (see table above). Aim the drops into the canal, not onto the pinna.
7. Massage the base of the ear (below the ear opening, over the temporomandibular joint) for 30 seconds to spread the medication deep into the canal. You should hear a squelching sound — that confirms it is reaching the horizontal canal.
8. Release the dog and let them shake their head if they want to — that spreads the drops further.
9. Wipe the pinna and outer canal with clean cotton wool to remove excess.
10. Praise and reward — the next application will be much easier if the dog associates it with a treat.
11. Complete the full course — stopping when the ear looks better leaves surviving bacteria that quickly regrow as a resistant infection.

Common (mostly mild):

• Transient stinging / head-shaking immediately after application
• Mild redness of the pinna skin
• Temporary ear discharge (cleaning out debris)
• Wet-ear look for 30–60 minutes

Serious — stop and call the vet immediately:

• Ototoxicity — balance problems, head tilt, vestibular signs, circling, falling, nystagmus (particularly if the eardrum is perforated or the drops reach the middle ear)
• Hearing loss that does not recover after stopping
• Severe contact dermatitis or ulceration
• Worsening pain despite treatment

• Do not use if the eardrum is perforated or cannot be visualised. Fluoroquinolones and silver sulfadiazine can damage the cochlea and vestibular apparatus if they reach the middle ear. Have a vet examine the ear with an otoscope before starting treatment if there is chronic discharge, head tilt or suspected rupture.
• Fluoroquinolone resistance — do not use Auriko Ear Drops for every otitis without diagnosis. Overuse drives resistance — particularly in Pseudomonas, which already has rising resistance rates in canine practice.
• Cats: use cautiously. Cats are more sensitive to fluoroquinolone retinotoxicity than dogs (classically described with oral enrofloxacin at high dose). Topical ocular-avoiding use is much safer than oral, but limit duration.
• Young growing animals: oral fluoroquinolones cause cartilage damage in growing dogs. Topical ear use gives minimal systemic exposure but discuss with a vet for dogs under 6 months.
• Pregnant or nursing queens / bitches: only under veterinary supervision.
• Identify the underlying cause. Recurrent otitis in the same ear usually means there is an underlying predisposing factor: allergies (atopic dermatitis, food allergy), anatomy (narrow canal, hairy ear, pendulous pinna), hypothyroidism, polyps, or chronic moisture. Treat the cause — otherwise infections will keep recurring.
• Ear cytology before treatment is ideal whenever possible — helps distinguish bacterial, yeast and mixed infections, and identifies Pseudomonas cases that need a fluoroquinolone.
• Operator safety: wash hands thoroughly after every application. Contact dermatitis to silver sulfadiazine is occasional; wear gloves if applying frequently.
• Do not get the drops in the dog’s eyes. If accidental, rinse with sterile saline.

• Known hypersensitivity to enrofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, silver sulfadiazine, sulphonamides, or formulation excipients
• Perforated tympanic membrane — risk of ototoxicity
• Otitis media without first examining the middle ear

• Otodectic mange (ear mites) alone — acaricides needed first
