⚡ Quick Answer — What is Auriko Ear Drops?

Auriko Ear Drops are veterinary ear drops gedurende dogs and cats combinerend enrofloxacin (a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic) with silver sulfadiazine (a broad-spectrum antimicrobial with good anti-Pseudomonas and antifungal cover) in a 15 ml bottle. Licensed for bacterial otitis externa (outer-ear infection) caused by susceptible organisms — most commonly Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Escherichia coli and mixed infections with Malassezia yeast. Clean the ear canal before each application with a veterinary ear cleanser. Instil 5–10 drops per affected ear once or twice daily for 7–14 days. Do not use if the eardrum is perforated — the fluoroquinolone and silver sulfadiazine vehicle can damage middle-ear structures. Have a vet examine the ear first if there is discharge, head tilt, or suspected rupture.

What Are Auriko Ear Drops?

Auriko Ear Drops are combination antibacterial ear drops licensed for dogs and cats with otitis externa (outer-ear infection). Each millilitre contains enrofloxacin (a veterinary fluoroquinolone antibiotic) plus silver sulfadiazine (a sulpha-silver complex with broad antibacterial and mild antifungal activity). The combination is chosen to cover the two most common problems in infected dog and cat ear canals: resistant Gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and mixed bacterial + yeast overgrowth.

Otitis externa is one of the top three reasons dogs are presented to veterinarians globally. Breeds with long, pendulous or hairy ears (Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Shih Tzus, poodles, Shar-Peis, Bichon Frises) are predisposed; cats are less commonly affected but can develop otitis externa from ear-mite infestation, allergies, or polyps. Untreated otitis externa progresses to otitis media (middle-ear infection) with head tilt, vestibular signs and deafness — so prompt treatment of the outer ear matters.

Auriko Ear Drops is a first- or second-line option for bacterial otitis externa. Empirical first-line treatment in most veterinary practices is a cleaner plus a polymyxin/fucidic acid/marbofloxacin/terbinafine type combination; Auriko Ear Drops is often chosen when a practice prefers fluoroquinolone cover or when Pseudomonas or resistant Gram-negatives are suspected. In ideal practice, ear cytology and occasionally culture and sensitivity should be done before committing to a specific antibiotic — overuse of ear fluoroquinolones drives resistance.

How Do Auriko Ear Drops Work?

  • Enrofloxacin is a second-generation veterinary fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It is bactericidal against most Gram-negative pathogens (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, E. coli, Klebsiella) and many Gram-positive pathogens (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius — the commonest otitis pathogen in dogs). It has weak activity against anaerobes and Streptococcus.
  • Silver sulfadiazine (known in human wound care as Flamazine / Silvadene) releases silver ions that bind bacterial DNA and disrupt membrane function — broad-spectrum bactericidal cover including good anti-Pseudomonas activity and a useful supplementary effect against Malassezia yeast overgrowth, which frequently accompanies canine otitis externa.

The two together cover the overwhelming majority of ear-canal pathogens seen in veterinary practice. Topical fluoroquinolone concentrations in the ear canal are 100× higher than achievable systemically, overcoming many resistance mechanisms that limit oral antibiotic efficacy. Silver sulfadiazine adds biofilm-breaking activity that oral drugs cannot deliver to the ear canal.

Toepassingen en Indicaties

  • Bacterial otitis externa in dogs — including Pseudomonas cases
  • Bacterial otitis externa in cats — less common than in dogs but responsive
  • Mixed bacterial and yeast otitis — the silver sulfadiazine component gives some useful anti-Malassezia cover; for heavy yeast growth add a dedicated antifungal like clotrimazole or miconazole-containing drops
  • Post-foreign-body otitis — after extraction of grass awns, ticks from the canal
  • Chronic otitis with failed first-line therapy — where culture and sensitivity indicate fluoroquinolone sensitivity
  • Post-surgical use — after ear-canal lavage or total ear-canal ablation recovery where an external-ear topical is prescribed

Auriko Ear Drops is niet first choice for: otodectic mange (ear mites — need selamectin, imidacloprid-moxidectin, or ivermectin products), pure yeast otitis (dedicated antifungal drops), primary auto-immune or proliferative ear disease, otitis media with eardrum rupture (systemic antibiotics + specialist imaging needed), or “cleaner” use alone — it is a medicated product, not an ear-canal washing solution.

How to Apply Auriko Ear Drops Properly

  1. Restrain the animal safely. Have a second person hold the animal and keep the head steady. Expect some wriggling — infected ears are painful.
  2. Clean the ear canal first with a veterinary ear cleanser (e.g. epi-otic, squalene-based). Pour a few ml into the canal, gently massage the base of the ear for 20–30 seconds, let the dog shake its head, then wipe the external canal and pinna with clean cotton wool. Never use cotton buds deep in the canal — they push debris inward and can damage the eardrum.
  3. Wait 10–15 minutes after cleaning for the canal to dry before applying medication.
  4. Warm the drops slightly by holding the bottle in your hand for a minute — cold drops sting more.
  5. Lift the pinna (ear flap) upward to open the canal. Gently place the tip of the bottle at the canal opening — do not insert it deeply.
  6. Instil the correct number of drops (see table above). Aim the drops into the canal, not onto the pinna.
  7. Massage the base of the ear (below the ear opening, over the temporomandibular joint) for 30 seconds to spread the medication deep into the canal. You should hear a squelching sound — that confirms it is reaching the horizontal canal.
  8. Release the dog and let them shake their head if they want to — that spreads the drops further.
  9. Wipe the pinna and outer canal with clean cotton wool to remove excess.
  10. Praise and reward — the next application will be much easier if the dog associates it with a treat.
  11. Complete the full course — stopping when the ear looks better leaves surviving bacteria that quickly regrow as a resistant infection.

Bijwerkingen

Common (mostly mild):

  • Transient stinging / head-shaking immediately after application
  • Mild redness of the pinna skin
  • Temporary ear discharge (cleaning out debris)
  • Wet-ear look for 30–60 minutes

Minder vaak:

  • Contact dermatitis on pinna skin
  • Hearing changes (usually transient, resolve on stopping)
  • Loss of appetite (rare)

Serious — stop and call the vet immediately:

  • Ototoxicity — balance problems, head tilt, vestibular signs, circling, falling, nystagmus (particularly if the eardrum is perforated or the drops reach the middle ear)
  • Hearing loss that does not recover after stopping
  • Severe contact dermatitis or ulceration
  • Worsening pain despite treatment

Waarschuwingen en voorzorgsmaatregelen

  • Do not use if the eardrum is perforated or cannot be visualised. Fluoroquinolones and silver sulfadiazine can damage the cochlea and vestibular apparatus if they reach the middle ear. Have a vet examine the ear with an otoscope before starting treatment if there is chronic discharge, head tilt or suspected rupture.
  • Fluoroquinolone resistance — do not use Auriko Ear Drops for every otitis without diagnosis. Overuse drives resistance — particularly in Pseudomonas, which already has rising resistance rates in canine practice.
  • Cats: use cautiously. Cats are more sensitive to fluoroquinolone retinotoxicity than dogs (classically described with oral enrofloxacin at high dose). Topical ocular-avoiding use is much safer than oral, but limit duration.
  • Young growing animals: oral fluoroquinolones cause cartilage damage in growing dogs. Topical ear use gives minimal systemic exposure but discuss with a vet for dogs under 6 months.
  • Pregnant or nursing queens / bitches: only under veterinary supervision.
  • Identify the underlying cause. Recurrent otitis in the same ear usually means there is an underlying predisposing factor: allergies (atopic dermatitis, food allergy), anatomy (narrow canal, hairy ear, pendulous pinna), hypothyroidism, polyps, or chronic moisture. Treat the cause — otherwise infections will keep recurring.
  • Ear cytology before treatment is ideal whenever possible — helps distinguish bacterial, yeast and mixed infections, and identifies Pseudomonas cases that need a fluoroquinolone.
  • Operator safety: wash hands thoroughly after every application. Contact dermatitis to silver sulfadiazine is occasional; wear gloves if applying frequently.
  • Do not get the drops in the dog’s eyes. If accidental, rinse with sterile saline.

Contra-indicaties

  • Known hypersensitivity to enrofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, silver sulfadiazine, sulphonamides, or formulation excipients
  • Perforated tympanic membrane — risk of ototoxicity
  • Otitis media without first examining the middle ear
  • Otitis of known fungal origin without bacterial component (use dedicated antifungal)
  • Otodectic mange (ear mites) alone — acaricides needed first

Opslag

  • Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light.
  • Keep the dropper tip clean — do not let it touch the animal’s ear canal or any other surface.
  • Tighten the cap fully after each use.
  • Discard 30 days after first opening.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Veelgestelde vragen

How long until Auriko Ear Drops works?

Most dogs are visibly more comfortable (less head-shaking, less ear-scratching) within 48–72 hours of starting twice-daily treatment. Discharge and smell usually clear within 5–7 days. Complete a full 7–14 day course even when the ear looks better — stopping early is the commonest reason for recurrence.

My dog’s ear still stinks after a week — what now?

Possible explanations: (1) the organism is resistant to enrofloxacin and needs a different antibiotic (ear cytology + culture and sensitivity needed); (2) the problem is actually yeast (Malassezia), not bacteria — needs an antifungal; (3) there is a foreign body (grass awn) in the ear; (4) the eardrum is perforated and the drops are not reaching the lower canal; (5) there is underlying allergy driving recurrence. See the vet — a proper diagnosis is more valuable than trying another over-the-counter product.

Can I use Auriko Ear Drops on my cat?

Yes — it is licensed for cats as well as dogs. Cat otitis externa is less common than canine and often has a different cause (ear mites, polyps, allergy). Always rule out ear mites first; they need acaricides, not antibiotics, as primary treatment. Use a smaller drop count (5 drops) in cats.

Why do I need to clean the ear before applying Auriko Ear Drops?

Pus, cerumen and debris in the canal physically block the drops from reaching the infected skin. Many antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, are also inactivated by pus (purulent material binds and sequesters the drug). A good ear clean first — with a veterinary cleanser, not cotton buds — removes the barrier and lets the drops work. This is the single most common reason ear-drop courses fail: the drops are applied to a canal full of debris that prevents them reaching the infected skin.

Is this the same as human ear drops?

Nee. Human ear-drop products (ciprofloxacin-hydrocortisone, neomycin-polymyxin-hydrocortisone) are formulated for human ears and should not be used on pets without veterinary advice. Auriko Ear Drops is licensed for dogs and cats with the correct drug concentrations and vehicle for animal ear skin and canal anatomy.

What if my dog has ear mites, not bacteria?

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are diagnosed by finding mites on ear cytology (they look like tiny white crawling dots on a black waxy discharge). Ear mites require acaricides — selamectin (Revolution / Stronghold), moxidectin-imidacloprid (Advocate), or ivermectin. Antibiotics like Auriko Ear Drops will not kill mites. If there is also a secondary bacterial infection from scratching and inflammation, Auriko Ear Drops is a reasonable add-on after mite clearance.

Can I use Auriko Ear Drops on puppies?

The systemic concern with fluoroquinolones in growing dogs is cartilage damage at high oral doses — topical ear use gives minimal absorption and the risk is low. However, for dogs under 6 months, discuss with a vet before starting; an alternative (polymyxin B + miconazole combination) may be preferred.

My dog’s ear infections keep coming back — why?

Recurrent otitis externa almost always has an underlying predisposing cause: atopic dermatitis or food allergy (the single commonest cause in dogs with recurrent otitis), anatomical issues (narrow canal, pendulous pinna, excessive ear hair in poodles/Shih Tzus), hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease, chronic ear moisture (swimming, humidity), or aural polyps (cats). Treating the antibiotic course alone will stop the symptoms temporarily but not the recurrence. Ask your vet to investigate and address the underlying cause.

Is Auriko Ear Drops a prescription item?

In most jurisdictions, yes — topical fluoroquinolones for veterinary use are specialist-supervised (POM-V in the UK, Rx in the US/EU/Australia). In India and some Asian countries, over-the-counter availability at veterinary pharmacies is widespread. Use responsibly: confirm diagnosis, check eardrum integrity, and complete the full course to avoid selecting for resistant organisms.
