Norethisterone (a synthetic progestogen) can postpone a menstrual bleed for travel, holidays, sporting events, or special occasions. Take 5 mg three times daily starting 3 days before the expected period; continue until you wish the period to start. Withdrawal bleed begins 2–3 days after stopping. Effective in approximately 95% of cases.

Continue dosing until you want the period to start (maximum 14 days continuous use is usually advised). Period typically starts 2–3 days after you stop. If breakthrough bleeding occurs while on norethisterone, the regimen has not failed — continue dosing.
Belangrijk. Norethisterone is NOT a contraceptive at this dose — use additional barrier method if avoiding pregnancy. Side-effects: mood change, breast tenderness, bloating, headache. Contraindications: history of VTE, active breast / liver / endometrial cancer, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe liver disease, pregnancy. Risk factors that warrant caution: history of migraine with aura, smoking over 35, family history of VTE, BMI > 35. Period-delay tablets are not appropriate for ongoing cycle suppression — use a continuous combined oral contraceptive (Yaz, Yasmin) for longer-term cycle control.
