What is the typical paediatric dose?

Amoebiasis: 35–50 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 7–10 days. Giardiasis: 15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 5–7 days. Anaerobic infection: 30 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses. Always weight-band per paediatrician.

Why must alcohol be avoided?

Metronidazole inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase, causing a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, vomiting, tachycardia) if alcohol is consumed during the course or within 48 hours after the last dose. Avoid alcohol-containing cough syrups and mouthwashes too.

Can it be taken with food?

Yes. Food slightly delays absorption but does not affect total exposure and may reduce nausea. Shake the suspension well before each dose and use the supplied measuring syringe or spoon for accuracy.

What are common side effects?

Metallic taste, nausea, headache, dark or red-brown urine (harmless — the drug oxidises in urine), and oral candidiasis with longer courses. Tell the prescriber if peripheral numbness, severe diarrhoea, or seizures occur.

When should the prescriber be told urgently?

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver disease, blood disorders (the drug can cause neutropenia with prolonged use), CNS disease, or current treatment with warfarin (INR rises sharply), lithium, phenytoin, busulfan, or disulfiram itself.
