Is Oflomac safe to take?

Oflomac is a fluoroquinolone — the FDA carries a black-box warning covering tendinopathy and tendon rupture (most often the Achilles, especially over age 60 or on corticosteroids), peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system effects, and aortic aneurysm/dissection. Reserve fluoroquinolones for documented bacterial infection where alternatives are unsuitable. Stop Oflomac and contact a clinician at the first sign of tendon pain, tingling, or unusual mood change.

Should I separate Oflomac from antacids and supplements?

Yes. Aluminium/magnesium antacids, sucralfate, iron, zinc, calcium, and dairy products bind ofloxacin/moxifloxacin and reduce absorption substantially. Take Oflomac at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after any of these.

Can I take Oflomac with tizanidine?

No — fluoroquinolones (especially ciprofloxacin) inhibit CYP1A2 and can raise tizanidine levels enough to cause severe hypotension and sedation. The combination is an absolute contraindication.

Does Oflomac prolong the QT interval?

Yes, all fluoroquinolones have a small QT-prolongation signal. Caution applies if you take other QT-prolonging drugs (amiodarone, sotalol, methadone, ondansetron, certain antipsychotics) or have known long-QT, hypokalaemia, or hypomagnesaemia.

Can I take Oflomac in pregnancy?

Oflomac is generally avoided in pregnancy and in children under 18 due to a theoretical risk of arthropathy, except where benefits clearly outweigh risk. Discuss with your clinician.

How long does a course of Oflomac last?

Course length depends on indication — short courses (3–7 days) are typical for uncomplicated UTI; respiratory infections may run 5–10 days; bone/joint infections require weeks under specialist supervision. Always finish the prescribed course even if you feel better.
