What Is Eflora Cream?

Eflora Cream is a topical eflornithine hydrochloride 13.9% w/w cream from Sun Pharma, supplied in a 15 g tube. Eflornithine (also known as DFMO — difluoromethylornithine) is an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase. It was originally developed as a cancer chemotherapy and anti-parasitic drug (systemic use for African trypanosomiasis, where it is on the WHO Essential Medicines List). The topical formulation was approved by the FDA in 2000 under the brand name Vaniqa (originally Bristol-Myers Squibb / Gillette, now Allergan / AbbVie) for reduction of unwanted facial hair growth in adult women.

Eflora Cream is a generic bioequivalent manufactured by Sun Pharma and supplied widely across Indian and other markets.

How Does Eflora Cream Work?

• Irreversibly inhibits ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) in the hair follicle. ODC is the rate-limiting enzyme that converts ornithine to putrescine, the first step of polyamine synthesis. Polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) are essential for the rapid cell division that drives hair growth.
• Without functional ODC, hair follicle cells cannot make enough polyamine to support their usual rapid proliferation. The follicle does not die — growth just slows.
• Effect is reversible: ODC is re-synthesised over time, so hair growth returns to pre-treatment rate within 8 weeks of stopping. Eflornithine must therefore be used indefinitely for continuous effect, similar to minoxidil in androgenetic alopecia.
• Systemic absorption is approximately 1%; plasma eflornithine is well below levels that cause the bone-marrow suppression seen with systemic IV dosing.
• Begin: reduction in visible hair growth rate usually appears at 4-8 weeks; maximum effect at approximately 6 months. Subjects in the pivotal trials reported a notable benefit at 24 weeks compared with placebo.

Eflornithine is a hair-growth inhibitor, not a depilatory. It does not remove hair that is already present — you still need to shave, wax, thread or laser. What eflornithine does is slow the rate at which new hair regrows between hair-removal sessions, so over time you need to remove hair less frequently, the hair is finer at removal, and the overall visible burden is lower.

When Eflora Cream Is Used

• Facial hirsutism in women — unwanted facial hair growth (upper lip, chin, sideburn area, jawline) in women. This is the licensed indication.
• Idiopathic hirsutism — facial hirsutism without an underlying endocrine cause, or with well-controlled PCOS / late-onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia
• PCOS-associated hirsutism — used alongside the underlying endocrine treatment (combined oral contraceptive, spironolactone, metformin where indicated)
• Combined with hair-removal methods — best results come from combining eflornithine with laser hair removal, intense pulsed light (IPL), or regular waxing/threading
• Post-menopausal facial hair — particularly chin hair that appears with declining oestrogen

Eflora Cream is NOT voor:

• Men — not studied, not indicated. Male beard/body hair is androgen-driven through different regulatory pathways.
• Body hair removal (legs, arms, chest, bikini line) — licensed only for facial use. Broader body coverage would also mean impractical surface area / cost.
• Scalp hair growth promotion — eflornithine reduces hair growth; use minoxidil or finasteride for scalp hair loss instead.
• Undiagnosed hirsutism with signs of virilisation (deep voice, male-pattern balding, clitoromegaly, rapid onset) — needs endocrine workup for androgen-secreting tumour
• Kinderen — not studied in paediatric patients

Eflora Cream How to Apply

1. Cleanse the treatment area with a mild cleanser; pat dry completely.
2. If you are going to remove visible hair at the same session (shaving, waxing, threading, depilatory cream), do that first, then wait at least 5 minutes before applying Eflora Cream. Let any irritation settle before applying the cream.
3. Apply a thin layer of Eflora Cream to the affected areas (upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns as needed). Rub in gently until absorbed. A pea-sized amount covers the upper-lip + chin combined.
4. Do not wash off for at least 4 hours. Do not apply cosmetics or sunscreen on top for at least 5 minutes (to let the cream absorb).
5. Apply twice daily, at least 8 hours apart — typically morning and evening.
6. Wash hands after applying.
7. Use continuously. The effect is reversible — hair growth returns to baseline within 8 weeks of stopping. Plan to use long-term.
8. Assess at 6 months. If you have seen no benefit after 6 months of twice-daily consistent use + hair-removal method, the product is unlikely to work for you and should be stopped.

Combination with laser / IPL: eflornithine + laser produces better and more durable results than either alone. Typical protocol: laser sessions every 4-6 weeks + eflornithine twice daily throughout. Continue eflornithine for at least 6-12 months after the last laser session to maintain the result.

Bijwerkingen

• Vaak voorkomend: skin irritation (acne-like eruption, stinging, burning, redness), folliculitis, ingrown hair, dryness. Most settle over 2-4 weeks as tolerance develops.
• Minder vaak voorkomend: contact dermatitis, paraesthesia, rash, nausea from strong taste if cream reaches the mouth
• Zeldzaam: severe allergic reactions, skin atrophy
• No systemic side effects at licensed topical doses — the systemic bone-marrow suppression seen with IV eflornithine is not a topical-use concern

• Application to broken, inflamed, or sun-burned skin — wait for healing first
• Application in the eye, mouth, nostrils, or genital area — licensed for facial skin only

Geneesmiddelinteracties

Topical eflornithine has very low systemic absorption (~1%) and no clinically documented drug interactions. Local interactions to manage:

• Other topical products on the same area — wait 5-10 minutes after eflornithine before applying moisturiser, sunscreen or cosmetics; do not occlude
• Topical retinoids (tretinoin) on facial skin — additive irritation; either alternate days or apply retinoid at night and eflornithine in the morning
• Waxing, threading, laser — wait at least 5 minutes after the mechanical removal for the skin to settle, then apply. Some users prefer a 24-hour gap after laser.

For PCOS-driven hirsutism, Eflora Cream is an adjunct, not a standalone solution. The underlying endocrine treatment (combined oral contraceptive, spironolactone, metformin where indicated) addresses the driver; eflornithine manages the downstream cosmetic effect. Combining with laser hair removal gives the best results. See an endocrinologist if PCOS is not already under management.
