What Is i-Can?

i-Can is a home urine pregnancy test that detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) — the hormone produced by the placenta after implantation (roughly 6–10 days post-conception, but variably). The test uses a qualitative immunoassay with antibodies that bind hCG and produce a visible line when the hormone is above the detection threshold. Manufactured by Piramal.

When to Test

Hoe te gebruiken

1. Read the specific instructions for your kit — details vary.
2. Collect first morning urine in a clean cup or apply test strip directly to urine stream per kit directions.
3. Read the result within the specified window (usually 1–5 minutes). Reading after this window can produce evaporation lines (false positives).
4. Two lines = pregnant (any visible second line, even faint). One line = not pregnant or too early. No control line = invalid test (retest with fresh kit).
5. A positive test should be confirmed with a clinician — blood hCG, dating ultrasound, and antenatal care planning.

Interpreting Results

False Results — Causes

False negatives (testing too early, diluted urine, low-sensitivity kit, hook effect at very high hCG): retest with first morning urine in 48–72 hours if period remains late.

False positives (rare): recent hCG injection (fertility treatments), certain cancers (trophoblastic disease), some medications, reading after the specified window (evaporation lines), chemical pregnancy (very early implantation then loss).

When to See a Clinician

• Positive test — for confirmation, dating, antenatal care planning
• Negative test but period still late beyond 7 days post missed period
• Abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, or dizziness with positive test — urgent (ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage)
• Irregular cycles making “missed period” unclear
• Recurrent negative tests despite symptoms of pregnancy

After the specified read window (e.g. 10 minutes), dried urine can leave a faint residue that looks like a positive line. Only trust results read within the kit’s specified time window.

Can medications cause false positives?

hCG injections used in fertility treatments cause positives (real hCG, not false). Other medications rarely affect results.

How accurate is i-Can?

When used correctly on or after the day of missed period: ~99% accurate for a positive result. False negatives are more common (usually testing too early). False positives are rare.
